This is one of the world's best-known places of worship because of its connection with St. Francis: In 1228, only 2 years after the saint's death, the building of the Basilica was begun. It still contains the frescoes of Cimabue and Giotto's Life of Francis cycle. City of peace, Assisi offers its visitors tableaux of small churches and buildings that have been perfectly preserved.

From Assisi you proceed to the south of the region, passing towns rich in history and art, like Spello where one of the most evocative festivals takes place in its steep, narrow streets: the famous Flower Festival for Corpus Christi.
The next stop is Foligno, a busy commercial centre, with strong ties to tradition. An excellent example of this is the 'Giostra della Quintana' with its procession in costume. held in September and involving the whole town.

SPOLETO Spoleto. Here the Festival of the Two Worlds (Festival dei due mondi) is held - an international cultural event where artistes from all over the world take part, with dance, theatre, painting and music events. Craftworkers produce articles that retain the essence of ancient festivals, flavours and music. fHere the most important traditional event of the area is held: the famous 'Corsa dei Ceri', a genuine link with folk history and culture.

LAGO TRASIMENO Lake Trasimeno and its islands. Here the colours of the countryside take on brighter hues; the lake is a mirror where 3 small islands rise up, green pearls on the smooth surface, easily reached by sailing boat, canoe or simply by ferryboat.
Castiglion del Lago and Passignano. These two towns, of Etruscan origin, are situated on the shores of the lake. Elegant and Lively, they are the main centres of Trasimeno.

GROTTE DI FRASASSI Continuing east, it is easy drive to the Frasassi caves. Here you go through an immense cavern and a series of large Chambers, tunnels, wells and labyrinths which snake for a further 13 kms. The crystalline concretions go to create an infinite series of forms: Stalactities and stalagmites which, with the passage of thousands of years and with variable, persistent dripping, thicken, lenghten, entwine themselves, create stunning reflections on the surface of the water, and take on bizarre shapes, giving us scenes of indescribable beauty.
